Interview with Daniel Watkins: Revolutionizing Aqua Park Safety with Aqua Socks
Interviewer: Hi everyone, and welcome! Today, we’re joined by Daniel Watkins, owner and operator of GC Aqua Park in the Broadwater Parklands on the Gold Coast. Daniel is a former professional wakeboarder, a Wakeboard Hall of Famer, and a lifelong water sports enthusiast. Daniel, thank you so much for being here.

Interviewer: Daniel, GC Aqua Park has been a staple in the Gold Coast community for years. Can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to introduce mandatory aqua socks at your park?
Daniel: Absolutely. Safety has always been at the heart of what we do at GC Aqua Park. Over the years, we’ve noticed that while injuries were relatively rare, saltwater conditions could lead to cuts, abrasions, and even some dislocations. We wanted to address these issues head-on and create an even safer environment for our guests. That’s when the idea of mandatory aqua socks came into play.
Interviewer: That’s fascinating! How did you make the transition to aqua socks, and what was the initial reaction from your guests?
Daniel: It was a bit of a journey. We introduced the policy in December 2024, and, understandably, some people were hesitant at first. After all, socks and sandy beaches don’t seem like a natural pairing! But we sourced high-quality, water-friendly socks with advanced grip material, and once people experienced the benefits, the feedback became overwhelmingly positive.
Interviewer: What kind of results have you seen since implementing the aqua sock policy?
Daniel: The results have been incredible. Since December, we’ve had over 50,000 visitors, and our incident reports have dropped by a staggering 86%. That’s a huge win for us. Parents are thrilled, the council is happy, and our team feels proud knowing we’re offering one of the safest water park experiences around.
Interviewer: Those numbers are amazing! What do you think has contributed most to that drop in incidents?
Daniel: The aqua socks make a big difference in preventing slips and reducing abrasions. They’re designed to perform well in the water and under sandy, salty conditions. Plus, the added traction helps guests feel more secure on the equipment, which likely reduces strain-related injuries as well.
Interviewer: I’ve heard you’ve also introduced a recycling program for the socks. Can you tell us more about that?
Daniel: Yes! We encourage guests to take their socks home as a souvenir, but about 30% of people leave them behind. For those, we have a sock recycling program where we clean, sanitize, and refurbish the socks for reuse. It’s a sustainable approach that also helps keep costs manageable.
Interviewer: That’s a great initiative. How has this policy impacted your business overall?
Daniel: It’s been a game changer. Not only have we improved safety, but the aqua socks have also enhanced our reputation as a safe and family-friendly venue. Parents feel more confident bringing their kids, and we’ve even noticed a boost in repeat visits. Additionally, we’re hopeful that the decrease in injuries will positively impact our insurance premiums in the long term.
Interviewer: Speaking of other parks, would you recommend this policy to other Aqua Park owners?
Daniel: Absolutely. I believe this is a step forward for the entire industry. If other parks adopt aqua socks, it would not only improve safety but also help establish Aqua Parks as a fun yet responsible activity.
